Chapter Nine

When Finn got home, he was surprised to find the lights still on. He entered the house and peered over the rail of the loft into the living room. The TV was on with the volume really low, but he didn’t see Law anywhere. The unnatural stillness in the atmosphere sent goose bumps rippling over his skin.

Something was wrong.

He crept down the stairs and peered around the corner. Still no Law. Inching his way along the wall, he peered into the kitchen and his breath caught in panic. He could see Law’s shoes. He was lying on the floor, but the rest of him was hidden behind the cabinets.

He stopped and listened, only hearing the drone of the TV. What had happened? Oh, fuck, what if Law was dead? He dropped to his knees and crawled over to those feet, hardly daring to even breathe.

When he met Law’s wide, unseeing eyes, he scrambled back in a panic. Law was leaning against the cabinets like he’d just sat down, but those blank eyes said he was dead. Oh my fuck, dead.

Finn’s heart thundered inside his head, his breathing so fast he began to see spots. He lowered his head between his legs and counted to ten. Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck. No, not again. Someone couldn’t die on him again.

It seemed to take hours, but finally Finn had his body back under control. Somewhat. He dared another look at Law.

He crept over to the body, but realized Law’s chest was still moving as he crawled closer. He was still breathing. Scrambling to touch him, Finn hissed, “Law, can you hear me?”

Law’s eyes didn’t move at all, but he was warm to the touch. Could he have slipped into a coma or something?

“Law, come on, man, you’re scaring the shit out of me.”

Finally, Law’s muscles tensed and he blinked. Awareness flooded into his eyes and then he frowned with concern. “Finn, what’s wrong? I thought you had a date with Jack tonight? Did something happen?”

Relief swept over Finn so quickly that he felt light-headed. He had been sure Law was dead. But if he wasn’t dead, then what the hell was that?

“Don’t move,” he instructed Law with a quick kiss to the forehead. “I need you to stay right here, breathing and alive.”

He reached into the back of the cabinet where Law hid his sidearm and then did a quick sweep of the house, making sure no one was in it. But it appeared to be perfectly clear. His check took less than two minutes, and when he came back into the kitchen, Law still sat there, but he was rubbing his head like it hurt.

Finn crouched down beside him. “Hey, tell me what happened last night? Did you fall and hit your head or something?”

“Last night?” Law asked his brows furrowed in confusion. “You just left a few minutes ago.”

“No, I didn’t. I left seven and a half hours ago.” This made no sense. He ran his fingers through Law’s hair, looking for bumps.
